For this installment in our Manufacturers in Nebraska series, we thought we’d chat about a company that’s not only a large employer of Nebraskans, but that has also made the news lately. Nebraska owned and operated company NEBCO manufactures materials needed to build buildings, streets, and highways.

NEBCO is also involved in mining, highway and road construction, finance, real estate development, and more–you can think of them as the Nebraskan ‘jack of all trades!’

A few weeks ago, we let you know about the $153 million bond request to build a new career center in Lincoln. NEBCO, along with five other construction companies, is one of the biggest supporters of the new center with a to help campaign for the new center. Their motto is “Building Nebraska From the Ground Up,” and the career center would certainly help to do so!

NEBCO employs about 1,000 employees total, and is a third-generation family owned business. You can find a full list of their products , but the company provides a pretty large range of goods and services for Nebraska. For construction alone, they produce ready-made concrete, retaining walls, landscaping materials, brick, concrete pipe, concrete and asphalt paving, traffic control equipment, and more.

One of the really wonderful reasons we’re lucky to have NEBCO here is their commitment to philanthropy. In terms of giving back, the company is dedicated to sharing their success with the community through the Abel Foundation (in memory of company founder George Abel). The foundation has contributed to the Lincoln YMCA, Boy Scouts of Nebraska, Audubon Nebraska, Hazel Abel Park, Mahoney State Park, and Lincoln Children’s Museum, to name a few.
